Feed readers

Follow your events and moots in Feedly, Inoreader, NetNewsWire or any other feed reader.

Info

Your feed link is private to you. Get it from Settings › Feeds, and treat it like a password.

Overview

A feed reader collects updates from the sites you follow into one list. EventMoot can give you a private Atom feed, so new events, decided times and moot posts show up there next to everything else you read. Atom works in every modern feed reader, including ones that call themselves "RSS readers".

Feeds are free on every plan.

What's in your feeds

You get two kinds of feed. Each has its own link, and they're all built on the same private key: reset it once and every link changes.

Your events feed

One feed for every event you can open: ones you organize, ones you're invited to, and ones in your moots. It gets a new item when:

  • Voting open, when the organizer publishes an event with a vote. It says which moot it's in and when voting closes.
  • It's on, when the organizer picks the time. It says the time, in your time zone, and the organizer's note.
  • Cancelled, when the organizer cancels. It shows their message, if they left one.

Drafts never appear. A "Same time" session has nothing to vote on, so it gets only an "It's on" item. A cancelled event loses its "It's on" item.

A moot's feed

Each moot you belong to has its own feed: the same items for the moot's sessions, plus new posts on its message board. A post shows its title, who wrote it and the first 280 characters or so. Replies, reactions and availability changes stay in the app.

Every item links to the page in EventMoot. Opening it still needs you to be signed in, so the feed tells you something happened and the details stay in the app.

  1. Open Settings › Feeds and press Turn on feeds.
  2. Press Copy next to Feed link. That's your events feed.
  3. For a moot's feed, open the moot, open its menu (the ⋮ button next to its name) and choose Copy feed link. If your feeds are off, this turns them on, and EventMoot tells you it did.

Settings › Feeds also shows when a feed reader last read your feed, so you can tell it's connected.

Connect a feed reader

Almost every reader works the same way: find Add, Follow or +, paste the link, and confirm. Here's where to look in a few popular ones.

Feedly

Open Follow Sources in the sidebar (the feed icon with a plus), paste your feed link, then press Follow and pick a folder.

Inoreader

Press Add feed (+), or use the search box at the top left, paste the link, and press Follow on the result.

NetNewsWire (Mac, iPhone, iPad)

On a Mac, press + and choose New Web Feed. On iPhone and iPad, tap + to add a feed. Paste the link, pick a folder if you like, and choose Add.

Thunderbird

Choose New › Feed Account to make a place for feeds, then open Manage Subscriptions on that account, paste the link into Feed URL, and press Add.

Other readers

Any reader that takes a feed URL works, including Miniflux, FreshRSS, The Old Reader, NewsBlur and Reeder. If yours asks whether the feed needs a password, it doesn't: the link carries everything.

Tips

  • Put each moot in a folder so a busy message board doesn't bury your event updates.
  • Expect a short delay. Readers check feeds on their own schedule, usually every 15 to 60 minutes, and EventMoot lets them reuse a copy for up to 15 minutes. For something you need straight away, the app's notifications and email are faster.
  • Use one reader per link. Each feed link can be read 60 times an hour, and all your feeds together 600 times. That's plenty for a reader or two, but not for a dozen apps polling the same link.

Your feed link works like a password for what's in your feeds: anyone who has it can read them, without signing in. So:

  • Don't post it in a shared place, such as a group chat, a public Slack or Discord channel, or a shared reader account.
  • Online readers keep a copy. Feedly, Inoreader and other web readers fetch your feed from their servers and store the items, like any feed. If that's not OK for a moot, use a reader that runs on your own device, such as NetNewsWire or Thunderbird.
  • Reset it if it leaks. In Settings › Feeds, Reset link makes a new link and stops the old one straight away, for your events feed and every moot feed. Paste the new links into your reader.
  • Turn off feeds in the same place to stop every link at once.

Your feeds only ever show what you can see in EventMoot right now. If you leave a moot, or are removed from it, its feed stops working on the reader's next check, and its events drop out of your events feed.

Troubleshooting

My reader says the feed doesn't exist

EventMoot gives the same "Not found" for each of these, so check them in turn:

  • The link was reset. A link copied before you pressed Reset link stops working. Copy it again from Settings › Feeds or the moot's menu.
  • Feeds are turned off. If Settings › Feeds shows Turn on feeds, your links stopped when feeds were turned off. Turning them on makes a new link, so paste that one into your reader.
  • The link was cut short when you pasted it. Copy it again.
  • You left the moot, or were removed from it. Its feed ends, and its events drop out of your events feed.
  • The moot was deleted. Its feed ends too.

My feed stopped updating

If your reader shows no error but nothing new arrives, check Last read by a feed reader in Settings › Feeds. If it's old, your reader has stopped checking: refresh the feed in the reader. Items only appear when voting opens, a time is decided or an event is cancelled, and, in a moot's feed, when someone posts on the board.

My reader says "too many requests"

That feed link has been read more than 60 times in the last hour, usually because several apps are polling it. Remove the extra subscriptions and it'll work again within the hour.

An item opens a sign-in page

That's expected: the feed is a notification, and the event or post is in the app. Sign in to EventMoot in that browser and the link opens.

That's expected. A feed is made for a feed reader, so a browser shows it as XML code, or offers to download it. Paste the link into your reader instead. If the browser shows just "Not found", the link has stopped working: see My reader says the feed doesn't exist.
